Chapter Two
They’d been back at school for two days and Rowan was more frustrated than ever. Her grandmother had been unavailable every time she’d reached out since getting back and her panic and anxiety had grown. Juniper and Rowan shared a dorm room, much like they shared a room at home, and Rowan’s sleep the night before had been full of nightmares, so they were both tired.
Students, teachers, and staff moved about the campus of Nottingham Academy, the crisp autumn air keeping them from idling too long outside.
Nottingham was the premier school in North America for witches, or so certain families would have you believe. Masquerading as an exclusive private academy, it had been training and educating witches since the 1700’s.
For some of these kids, they were dropped off on move-in day and picked up at graduation. School went all year round, with breaks for the quarter and cross quarter days, but it didn’t lead to long visits, so many just stayed on campus and celebrated together. Other students whose families lived closer, would come and go. The White girls spent a couple of holidays at home, but they mostly resided on campus. They preferred it that way.
A bell rang through the halls and students hurried to class.
“Sympathetic magic is when elementals can use like for like to influence the behavior of the element. For example, if you pour water out of a pitcher into a bowl, but envision water gushing out of a hidden spring in order to find water, then you have used sympathetic magic. If you strike a match, then envision a ring of fire around your outdoor casting circle, you have used sympathetic magic,” the professor said as she paced back and forth across the front of the room.
