This time of year, when the veil is thin and the ancestors are close, it always feels like the first visit with the family for the holiday season. A time for those who have gone on before, to come back and check in. Folklore, mythology, religious, and cultural beliefs all point to this being a time of reflection and remembrance.
For me, it’s a visceral shift from outdoor activities to preparing for the cold and storms. Outdoor planters are tucked up or put inside, decorative bits are put away, and the outdoor heater is set up and the tank filled.
Miguel has been working on the porch and it’s really coming along. Max got hurt and couldn’t finish it, so there have been a few delays here and there. Ace has been supervising.

I’m one of those people who, if I see something needs doing, I just want to get it done. This summer - with this house - has been a series of lessons in patience. I’ve often said “Patience is a virtue, but I’m not a virtuous person.” I’ve had to adjust. A lot. However, it’s all getting done and we should be okay for the winter. I hope.
Are you a ‘get it done now’ type or the kind that is fine with waiting? Let me know in the comments.
When I get the porch stained (in a couple of days) I’ll take more pictures. I still need to paint the new front door - waiting on one of the paints to arrive. I don’t want to take the hardware all off and only get half of it done.
Now for the book part of the program. Wait - don’t scroll away! :laughs: Check these out and grab some good reads.

I love this season so much. It’s definitely a time of introspection and preparation. I also associate it with a time of harvest, being thankful for what is, letting go of what’s been and gone, and preparing the soil for something new.
Ace looks like my kind of supervisor!🐾
